One thing I've learnt about crossing the roads here is, you need to look left, right, forward, backwards!!! The reason I say that is because you have cars, trucks, buses, scooters, rickshaws and bicycles on the road. You never know where the traffic is coming from. The other day I witnessed an accident near a school crossing. Fortunately the child was OK.
The public transport system in Suzhou/ China is not so bad. The taxi cards have been so helpful. These cards have addresses (hotels, apartment, doctors, supermarkets, tourist sites etc.) written in Chinese and English. All you do is show it to the taxi driver and he knows where to take you. If you know how to say the street names in Chinese then the cards won't be needed.
The public bus service is so cheap. You pay only 3RMB for a 1 hour bus ride! Depending on which part of the city you are in, the buses can get VERY crowded.
This is a typical bus stop.
