Canals in Suzhou

-

Canals criss-cross through the city of Suzhou. For a first time visitor a cruise along the Grand Canal on a gondola boat is a must. In the past, the Grand Canal stretched from Beijing down to Hangzou but now parts of the canal has been
destroyed.

According to history, Marco Polo once described Suzhou as one of the most beautiful cities in China and it is referred to as "Venice of the East".  You can still see evidence of this beauty along the ancient canals in the old section of town.

Suzhou is so huge that I still haven't found the time to explore parts of the old city.
Am hoping that in the near future to visit the water villages outside of Suzhou. These villages are famous for their waterways, bridges and authentic village homes.
